Cert BA is a CGMA entry level programme that, on successful completion, gives you entry on to the professional CGMA programme. The Certificate in Business Accounting is an entry-level course recognised in its own right, providing a valid standalone credential for those starting their accounting career.

Whilst theoretically someone leaving school can study CERT BA for one year and then enter CIMA, it is not recommended.

The CIMA programme comprises of a total of 12 exams: nine objective tests and three case study exams, collectively known as CIMA exams. CIMA courses are designed to prepare students for these exams and are supported by flexible study options across the three levels.
CIMA study options include online resources that are tablet-friendly and accessible for 12 months.
The AAT and an accounting degree will give you exemption through the CERT BA level. Some accountancy degrees may also give you additional exemptions.

The CIMA Operational Level consists of three computer-based objective tests and one case study exam, each covering a different aspect of accounting.
The Operational workplace simulation is a computer-based assessment that simulates real-world business scenarios and is conducted four times a year: February, May, August, and November.
Focuses on the role of the finance function and how it interacts within a digital world. It is important with the rapid rise of AI in accounting that students are aware of the positive impact technology makes on the role of an accountant and senior management.
Looks at cost accounting and teaches students how to manage costs using management accounting tools and techniques, as well as the control of internal cost management for decision-making, budgetary control and managing risk.
Covers the preparation of financial statements, corporate governance, taxations and the regulatory framework under which accounts are prepared.
After passing the three objective tests above, students are required to pass a workplace simulation. The case study is designed to test a students ability to apply the theory learnt in E1, P1, F1 into a real work scenario.

The Management Level of the CIMA qualification consists of three computer-based Objective Tests and one Case Study exam.
Upon successful completion of the Management Level, students are awarded the CIMA Advanced Diploma in Management Accounting. The CIMA Diploma is a recognised certification at this stage. Planning will be viewed through the following units and case study.
Looks at the overall physical performance of the Company through recognised models. Including reviewing and managing staff performance and controlling projects through to successful outcomes.
Looks at the cost management requirements of managing the performance and growth of the company. You will learn various techniques, to assess efficiency including risk management, capital investment requirements and cost versus reward.
Focuses on the complexities of more advance financial reporting including, group accounts, IFRS and GAAP's accounting standards plus financial performance analysis.
CIMA case study exams simulate real-world business scenarios and are conducted four times a year: February, May, August, and November.

The CIMA strategic level is the final CGMA Professional qualification. The final stage looks at the high-level, long-term strategic decision-making, risk assessment and overall senior leadership.
It is typically preparing individuals for a role such as a Chief Finance Officer (CFO). The Strategic level consists of three computer-based Objective Tests and one Case Study exam.

The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) offers two certifications:
CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting (Cert BA) - Is seen to be the equivalent of a Level 4 programme or equivalent to the first year of a degree. You will sit four CIMA exams at this level.
CIMA Professional Qualification (CGMA) – Equivalent to a Level 7 or a Master's degree in Accounting. It is a premium accountancy designation in the accountancy field of commerce. You will sit twelve CIMA exams at this level.

The reason that online is so popular is, own pace learning allows you to decide how many units you study per year.
Whilst it is often written that the Chartered Institute programmes take four years. It is more likely that your studies will take longer than a year per level particularly at the strategic level. Remember you are also building a pressured career alongside.
