AAT Level 2 Certificate in accounting

Unit 1 – Introduction to Bookkeeping (ITBK)

Learn the core accounting skills to prepare accounting records for sole traders, partnerships and small limited companies. You'll learn how to set up bookkeeping systems, process customer transactions, understand the use of ledgers and apply the rules of debit and credit up to the initial trial balance.

Unit 2 – Principles of Bookkeeping Controls (POBC)

This AAT Level 2 Certificate unit builds your knowledge with control accounts, journals, and bank reconciliations to strengthen financial accuracy.

Unit 3 – Principles of Costing (PCTN)

This unit allows you to understand basic costing techniques and how financial information supports internal cost controls and business decision-making.

Unit 4 – The Business Environment (BESY)

This final AAT Level 2 Certificate unit helps you gain a strong grasp of business structures, the external business environment, corporate social responsibility, ethics, and the finance function within organisations. This unit will also look at contract law and the sale of goods act.

Unit 1 – Business Awareness

This AAT Level 3 Diploma unit develops a strategic view of business operations and the role of professional accounting in supporting performance decision-making and data security.

Unit 2 – Financial Accounting: Preparing Financial Statements

Unit 2 of the AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting masters the preparation of financial accounting principles through advanced double entry bookkeeping, for various business types. You'll learn to interpret financial data confidently. You'll learn to account for non-current assets and disposals by keeping accurate records of acquisitions to record depreciation calculations

Unit 3 – Management Accounting Techniques

You'll learn in detail through variance analysis the importance of monitoring and reporting on actual and budgeted costs. Management accounting information is key to company stability and profitability.

Unit 4 – Tax Processes for Businesses

This final unit of AAT Level 3 Diploma helps you to learn how to manage advanced accounting tax processes within a business environment and understand tax compliance requirements.

After completing the AAT Level 3 Diploma you're eligible to use AATQB after your name and open your own bookkeeping and accounting practice.

AAT Level 4 Diploma for Professional Accounting Technicians

Unit 1 – Financial Accounting

At Level 4 Financial accounting unit, looks at the legally required preparation of a single company's year-end financial statements. You will learn about the legal framework that surrounds the accounts preparation including learning about international financial reporting statements (IFRS's).

Once the accounts are prepared and submitted to Company's House, you will learn how to interpret the performance from those accounts through performance indicators and ratio analysis.

Knowing the performance results is critical to senior management and stakeholders to ascertain the healthy and true wealth of the company. Stakeholders will make investment decisions based on the performance of the company and its credit worthiness and credit risk.

Unit 2 – Management Accounting

The AAT Level 4 management accounting unit deals with the internal management of operational expenditure through the budgeting process and variance analysis of budget outcomes. The accuracy of the budgeting processes allows for accurate cash forecasting needs that underpin operational and strategic decision-making.

An efficient internal cost control system is critical to the financial health, profitability and future growth of the company.

Unit 3 – Audit and Internal Controls

This unit teaches students about the relevance and importance of the internal controls system within an organisation’s accounting system and the wider operational functions of the company. It also identifies the processes effectiveness for identifying fraud risks and how the controls are used to mitigate those risks.

Learners will look at how efficient these processes are and learn how to improve processes where necessary to support financial integrity and better decision-making.

Students will also learn about the principles of professional ethics and the audit and assurance framework allowing them to gain a clear understanding of the regulatory environment and the role of corporate governance.

Unit 4 – Principle of Taxation

This unit introduces students to all aspects of the UK income tax systems including personal taxation and business taxation.

The unit introduces the learner to the different taxes paid including for personal taxation both PAYE and self-employment taxation. You will learn about tax on personal property and investments.

Other personal taxation includes inheritance tax and capital gains tax.

For businesses, students will be able to calculate Corporation Tax for companies, including income from trading, property and interest. While covering business tax, you will learn how to compute business taxes including the treatment of capital assets and related tax implications. 

Mandatory Unit 5 – Advanced Business Awareness

This unit expands the students understanding of the wider aspects of worldwide business. You will look at the challenges business face and how those challenges can, when handled well, turn into business growth opportunities. It is important to understand business operations overall to be truly effective within the finance function.

The understanding above will allow students to be better informed when they contribute to the decision-making process within the company and future sustainability.

On completion of Levels 2, 3 and 4 of this AAT qualification, students will become an AAT Accountant and with the appropriate work-experience can apply for the designatory MAAT after their name. y

By taking the AAT Level 2, 3, 4 combined package you'll have everything you need to go from complete novice to fully qualified AAT accounting technician.

Achieving Level 4 alongside work experience can also position you for mid-to-senior operational roles within an organisation.

The AAT 2, 3, and 4 combined training package is designed to fit around your schedule.

  • AAT Level 2: Most students complete the Level 2 Certificate in Accounting in 6 to 9 months, with 12 months access to the course materials.
  • AAT Level 3: The Level 3 Diploma in Accounting usually takes around 9 to 12 months to finish, and you'll have 15 months access to the learning platform.

You must score at least 70% overall to receive your qualification.
