GDPR deadline - the time has come!

The GDPR deadline is TODAY!

Have you sent your privacy policy update email? Have you secured the data and information of your customers?

Data protection rules are being re-written thanks to the sheer volume of data and information being processed by companies. Today, 25th May 2018, the European Union will enforce the agreed General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) to update data regulation for its citizens, and the companies who deal with the data of any EU citizen, even if the company itself is based outside of the EU.

GDPR took more than four years to be agreed upon, but the European Parliament and European Council managed to agree in April 2016 on the updates to the regulation and directive.

What does Brexit mean for GDPR?

Well, we have our own version, basically. The UK is bringing in its own Data Protection Bill that will include everything within GDPR, just with a few minor tweaks under the Data Protection Act 2018.

The bill is the third generation of data protection law in the UK and was passed through the House of Commons and the House of Lords and given Royal Assent, with main provisions commencing on the same date as GDPR (25th May 2018, in case you hadn’t heard).

EU member states currently operate under 1995 data protection regulation with their own national laws to back it up. The UK operates under the Data Protection Act 1998 which describes how your information can be used by companies, government and other organisations. The aim of GDPR, and the Data Protection Bill, is to unify data protection laws and give consumers more control over how their information is used by organisations and other entities.

With the increase of digital data, breaches have become more frequent and severe in both size and devastation they can cause for a company, and in the worst cases, the consumers who are effected by their data being taken.

GDPR will ensure that organisations in all industries will protect the data of their consumers, or face serious repercussions.
