How to nail language learning

There are many reasons why you may wish to learn a new language: for business purposes, international travel, relationships and much more! Whatever your reason is for learning a new language, you may start off like most people and feel a little overwhelmed but there are some nifty tips and tricks you can use to help you improve your skills and keep yourself motivated:

Have a goal in mind

Remind yourself why you're learning your chosen language and use it to keep yourself motivated. Maybe you have a time limit like an upcoming holiday, want to chat to a friend or just feel like taking on a challenge.

You may find it helpful to jot your reasons for learning down and stick them up in the place you tend to study - motivation is a key part of language learning and having a goal in mind can help you through times of self-doubt.

Focus on pronunciation

Believe it or not, it's harder to memorise words you struggle to pronounce. Practice repeating tricky vocabulary to nail the sound, and listen to the language as much as possible to train your ears to hear how native speakers talk. As your confidence grows, so will your vocabulary!

Practice, practice, practice

It sounds obvious, but the best way to learn a language is to practice little and often. Try to strike a balance between learning new words and practising those you've already covered.

Can't find anyone to speak to? Have a chat to yourself instead - it may feel strange at first, but this is still a great way to put your new skills into practice.

Get your ear in

Many people find learning something new easier by listening to it. Learning a new language is no different!

Get a feel for how the language sounds - watch films, listen to music or find podcasts to download. The more you listen, the more familiar you will become.

Have fun!

Language learning is so much easier when you're enjoying yourself. Think of fun ways you can practice, such as writing your own songs, reading comics or watching a dubbed version of your favourite film. Avoid putting yourself under pressure or beating yourself up if you find it hard - be patient and you'll get there.
